The purpose of Vocational Rehabilitation is to help people with disabilities meet their employment goals. This agency assists people whose disability creates a barrier to employment. Vocational Rehabilitation can help with job training and placement to qualified candidates. The student's case manager will have a conversation with the student and/or parents about making a referral to Vocational Rehabilitation before they exit the school system. Students are referred with permission. With permission, a representative from Vocational Rehabilitation will be also invited the IEP meeting to assist in planning services.

Social Security (SSI) 18 years old – If a person has a disability, they can apply for Social Security benefits. Before the student is 18, parent's income will be considered in eligibility for benefits. However, once the student turns 18 years old, the parent's income will no longer be a factor in eligibility determination. If the student already receives SSI, they will have to apply for SSI again upon turning 18 years of age.
It is important to consider that with Social Security benefits, students will qualify for other important benefits such as TennCare and Vocational Rehabilitation without the financial status of the family being a consideration.
